Investigation Discovery has slated the six-part series A Killer Among Friends to premiere Monday, July 14 at 10PM ET, with episodes also streaming on HBO Max.
Executive produced and narrated by Jennifer Love Hewitt, the docuseries zeroes in on cases where bonds of trust become the battleground. Each hour-long episode explores homicides that unfold within friend groups, classmates, or social circles—spaces where suspicion isn’t just personal, it’s proximity-based.
The premiere, Killer on Campus, covers the fatal shooting of a college football player and the suspect search that followed within his tight-knit peer group. Later episodes expand the scope: a vanished theatre lead, a Vegas girls’ trip turned deadly, and a middle school disappearance that triggered a small-town reckoning. Production comes from Bunim-Murray, with Julie Pizzi, Jesse Daniels, Farnaz Farjam, and Elissa Halperin also serving as EPs.
For ID, A Killer Among Friends continues a push toward stylised true crime built around personal stakes and emotional proximity. While the network has long specialised in domestic suspense, this series leans into social betrayal and psychological intimacy—a thematic sweet spot for viewers drawn to the “how could they?” dynamic over procedural resolution.
Hewitt, who’s spoken about her interest in “multi-perspective storytelling,” adds both profile and polish to the series. Her presence reinforces ID’s strategy of pairing genre familiarity with marquee talent—especially on projects designed to compete for streaming attention.
