Idris Elba has been cast as the lead in A24’s television adaptation of Things Fall Apart, the classic novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. The story centers on Okonkwo, an iconic character in African literature, known for his strength and determination to uphold his cultural traditions in the face of British colonial intrusion. Elba will bring Okonkwo to life in this dramatic series.
The novel, originally published in 1958, explores themes of identity, power, and the clash between tradition and colonization. The adaptation aims to capture the emotional and cultural depth of Achebe’s work, focusing on Okonkwo’s battle to protect his people and preserve their way of life as foreign forces challenge his authority. His unyielding nature, while a source of strength, also leads to profound personal conflict as change becomes inevitable.
The novel has been adapted several times, including a 1961 radio play, a 1970 movie and a popular 1987 mini-series.
A network for the series has not yet been confirmed. Further details about the production and release schedule will be revealed in due course.
