The episode examines the disturbing events surrounding Gretchen’s death. At the time of the murder, the couple was going through a divorce, and David had moved out of their Jupiter, Florida home.
On March 21, 2020, David entered Gretchen’s home and fatally stabbed her in the garage. He then attempted to cover up his crime by disposing of her body in a nearby wooded area and sending texts from Gretchen’s phone, claiming she had COVID-19 and was being treated at a CDC facility. This sparked concern among her loved ones, who reported her missing.
The investigation uncovered security camera footage from Gretchen’s home, which showed David ambushing and attacking her. Further evidence of a struggle was found, including a broken picture frame and bloodstains. David’s arrest took place in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on March 31, and he was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping.
He eventually accepted a plea deal, confessing to the murder and revealing the location of Gretchen’s body. In exchange for his cooperation, David received a reduced sentence of 38 years in prison.
