True Crime Bike

The upcoming episode of Imperfect Murder on Crime & Investigation examines the tragic case of Samantha Tessla Koenig, who was abducted and murdered by serial killer Israel Keyes in 2012. The episode, titled “Koenig,” airs on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 8:00 p.m.

On February 1, 2012, 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was working at a coffee stand called Common Grounds in Anchorage, Alaska, when she was kidnapped by 34-year-old Israel Keyes. Wearing a ski mask, Keyes ordered a coffee before pulling out a gun and forcing his way into the stand. He tied Koenig’s hands, led her to his truck, and drove her around town, explaining that it was a kidnapping for ransom.

Keyes reassured Koenig that she would be returned safely if she cooperated. He drove back to the coffee stand to retrieve her cell phone, using it to send deceptive text messages to her boyfriend and the owner of Common Grounds. Keyes then obtained Koenig’s debit card and PIN, as well as the location of her house. When confronted by Koenig’s boyfriend, Keyes fled but later returned to sexually assault and asphyxiate Koenig, leaving her body in a shed while he went on a pre-planned cruise with his family.

Upon his return, Keyes prepared a ransom note, took steps to make it appear that Koenig was still alive, and sent a text to her boyfriend with a demand for $30,000. The note was discovered by the Anchorage Police Department, and Keyes eventually dismembered and disposed of Koenig’s body in Matanuska Lake. Samantha’s father, James Koenig, deposited reward money into her account, leading to ATM withdrawals in multiple states and the arrest of Keyes in Texas.

The investigation uncovered Keyes as a prolific serial killer responsible for multiple kidnappings and murders across the country. He confessed to Koenig’s murder and the killings of Bill and Lorraine Currier in Vermont, admitting to at least three murders but believed to have taken up to 11 lives. Israel Keyes ended his own life in his jail cell on December 2, 2012, leaving a chilling message with 11 skulls drawn in his blood.
