Vicky McClure’s Emma, already fraying at the edges, learns of her mother’s passing, quickly swapping out her frustrations with Phoebe for full-blown sorrow.
The news hits Emma hard, hard enough that it causes a lapse in her work, leading to an accident that injures care worker Caroline. Her fragile grip on reality appears to loosen further, as her strange nocturnal habits worsen. This leads to a chilling discovery in the pond—a finding that will, no doubt, dig Emma deeper into her waking nightmare.
As the series moves forward, it looks to pick up the unsettling pace set by Sarah Pinborough’s novel, on which the show is based. With Pinborough and McClure themselves as executive producers, the series looks to maintain the book’s unsettling atmosphere. By the end of this hour, Emma will find herself facing questions from the police, suggesting her night terrors are bleeding into her daytime life in the worst ways possible.
