ITV has started filming I Fought The Law, a new drama series starring Sheridan Smith. The series is based on Ann Ming’s book, For The Love of Julie, and recounts Ming’s 15-year struggle to change the Double Jeopardy Law and bring her daughter’s murderer to justice.
Screenwriter Jamie Crichton adapts Ming’s book, exploring her battle against the criminal justice system and her pursuit of justice for her murdered daughter, Julie. Despite two mistrials and an acquittal, Ming persevered in her quest for truth and accountability.
The cast for the series includes Daniel York Loh as Charlie Ming, Enzo Cilenti as DS Mark Braithwaite, and introducing Marlowe Chan-Reeves. They are joined by Victoria Wyant, Andrew Lancel, and Rufus Jones.
I Fought The Law centres around the impact of Julie’s disappearance and the traumatic experience of her mother, Ann, who found her body 80 days after she went missing. The series depicts Ann’s criticism of the Cleveland Constabulary and her relentless pressure on the police to find her daughter’s killer.
Ann’s campaign targeted the Criminal Justice System, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the Government. She challenged the Law Commission, eminent Defence Barristers, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General, and two Home Secretaries. Her determination to fight for justice was unwavering.
I Fought The Law has been commissioned for ITV by Head of Drama, Polly Hill, and Senior Drama Commissioner Helen Ziegler. The four-part series is produced by Hera Pictures in association with All3Media International, with executive producers Liza Marshall and Charlotte Webber.
Filming is currently taking place in Teesside and the surrounding areas, with support from North East Screen through the North East Production Fund. All3Media will manage the international distribution of the series.
