ITV has commissioned ‘Betrayal’, an intense espionage thriller set within MI5. Starring Shaun Evans, the series follows a veteran spy’s race against time to thwart a major threat while confronting personal turmoil.
John Hughes, portrayed by Shaun Evans (Endeavour, Vigil), is an MI5 agent who joined during the war on terror. Now in his mid-40s, he grapples with the evolving landscape of national security and a progressive work environment.
Acting on instinct, John meets Ehsan, a British Iranian with gangland ties, who hints at a looming threat. Before Ehsan can reveal details, he is assassinated, prompting John to kill the gunman. This act entangles John in a web of suspicion, with his superiors believing he’s involved in a gang war.
Determined to clear his name and uncover the truth, John digs into Ehsan’s past while battling mental health struggles. Complications arise with the introduction of Mehreen, an intelligence operative who takes over John’s duties and sparks an electric connection, testing his loyalties.
Set in London and Manchester, ‘Betrayal’ begins filming in early 2025. It’s penned by award-winning writer David Eldridge.
Produced by Mammoth Screen and Navarino Pictures, the show is executive produced by Damien Timmer, Tom Leggett, David Eldridge, and Shaun Evans. Rebecca Keane oversaw the series development. Mammoth Screen is part of ITV Studios.
‘Betrayal’ is commissioned for ITV and ITVX by Head of Drama Polly Hill and Drama Commissioner Huw Kennair-Jones, who will oversee production.
