This May, streaming service iwonder is turning up the volume with a quartet of music documentaries spanning continents and genres. From the personal struggles of an Australian pianist to the chaotic world of a British post-punk duo, these films take a look into the lives and creative processes of artists who live and breathe music.
First up is “Hello I’m David,” a portrait of David Helfgott, the Australian pianist whose life story inspired the Oscar-winning film “Shine.” Then, things get a bit louder and possibly a bit messier with “Fck 2020,” a look at German techno giants Scooter as they wrestle with the realities of making music during the COVID-19 pandemic. For a dose of raw, anti-establishment energy, there’s “Bunch of Kunst,” which follows the British post-punk duo Sleaford Mods.
Rounding out iwonder’s May music offerings is “A Story of Sahel Sounds.” This documentary travels across West Africa, showcasing local musicians who share their art via mobile devices, illustrating how music connects people across distances and circumstances.
These documentaries, which have previously screened at film festivals like DocEdge, Hot Docs, CPH:DOX, and IDFA, explore themes of resilience, creativity, and personal expression through music. They are available on iwonder throughout May.
