Jacob Greber has been named Political Editor of 7.30, the ABC’s flagship current affairs program, stepping into the high-profile role vacated by Laura Tingle as she transitions to her new post as Global Affairs Editor. The announcement was made on-air during Thursday’s edition of the program, with Greber set to take over beginning Sunday, 7 July.

Greber, a seasoned political and economic journalist with nearly three decades in the field, joined ABC in 2024 and currently serves as Chief Digital Political Correspondent. His appointment comes just days after the network confirmed the cancellation of Q+A after 18 years on air—an unmistakable signal that 7.30 is now carrying the weight of ABC’s frontline political interrogation in a post-election media cycle.

With roots in the Canberra Press Gallery, Greber’s career spans domestic and international reporting stints—including posts at Bloomberg in Zurich and a ten-year tenure at The Australian Financial Review, where he served as U.S. Correspondent in Washington. His reporting portfolio bridges fiscal policy, geopolitics, and institutional analysis—skills that align with 7.30’s editorial shift toward deeper, accountability-driven journalism.

Greber will retain a multi-platform footprint across ABC NEWS, continuing to contribute to digital analysis and election coverage, as well as maintaining his voice on the Politics Now podcast and appearances on Insiders. His elevation also signals ABC’s intent to tighten integration across broadcast and digital, consolidating its political coverage under high-calibre, cross-platform editors.

The decision to place Greber at the centre of 7.30’s coverage underscores ABC’s evolving strategy: fewer formats, deeper focus. With Q+A exiting the schedule, and the next federal term just beginning, Greber steps into a critical role shaping how the national broadcaster frames and challenges political power over the next three years.

Greber officially begins as 7.30 Political Editor on July 7.
