Daytime talk shows often traffic in the predictable. But sometimes, just sometimes, a pairing emerges so wonderfully odd, so potentially delightful, it warrants a raised eyebrow, even a flicker of genuine interest. Such is the case with Monday’s Jennifer Hudson Show, featuring the musical stylings of Jon Batiste alongside a 10-year-old bird-call prodigy, Samuel Henderson.
Batiste, the Grammy- and Oscar-winning artist, is slated to discuss his new album, Beethoven Blues (Batiste Piano Series, Vol. 1). Hopefully, this means a performance or two, because if you’re going to have Jon Batiste on your show, you might as well let the man tickle the ivories.
Adding a certain je ne sais quoi to the proceedings is young Samuel Henderson, whose remarkable avian mimicry recently catapulted him to viral fame. The talent, apparently, blossomed at his school’s talent show. Henderson will appear with his mother, Lori, presumably to provide moral support and occasional interpretive dance as her son channels the feathered kingdom.
So, if you find yourself with a free moment on Monday, consider tuning in. You might witness the birth of a beautiful, bizarre friendship. Or, at the very least, some decent piano playing and surprisingly accurate bird noises.
