Maddie Carwile, a healthcare program coordinator from New York City, Alex Michev, an attorney from Richmond, Virginia, and David Erb, a puzzle designer from Seattle, Washington, and a three-day champion with winnings of $90,754, were the contestants on Thursday’s episode of Jeopardy!.

The game began with the following categories: William & Mary, That’s on Brand, National Symbols, Album Collection, and The Group of 7. During the first break, the scores stood at David with $1,000, Alex with $3,400, and Maddie with $2,800.

As the game progressed into Double Jeopardy!, the categories unfolded: Classic Novels, Tree People?, Great Landform, Psychology, and Famous Fathers-in-Law. David made a strong move with Daily Double number two, doubling his score to $4,000. However, it was Maddie’s turn to take a hit with Daily Double number three, as she dropped $2,500, allowing Alex to pull ahead with $16,000 entering Final Jeopardy! against Maddie’s $13,900 and David’s $4,400.

The Final Jeopardy! category was “Stars of the 20th Century.” The clue: “A 1927 N.Y. Times headline: ‘Witness testifies this woman rewrote play and insisted on the spicy scenes because the city liked them.'”

All three contestants stumbled on the Final Jeopardy! clue, with incorrect responses from each, the correct response was “Who Was Mae West?”. Interestingly, Maddie’s conservative wager of $2,200 proved to be a winning strategy, securing her victory with a final score of $11,700. David finished second with $4,277, followed by Alex with $4,000.
