Jeopardy! Second Chance Tournament Thursday January 2 Recap

Jeopardy! Key Art

Three hopefuls, Kaitlin Tarr, a ceramic artist from Denver; Colleen Matthews, a speech-language pathologist from Hillsboro, Oregon; and Will Yancey, a history lecturer from Banquete, Texas, stepped onto the Jeopardy! stage, each vying for a spot in the Tournament of Champions. This was another round of the Second Chance tournament and no returning champion.

The first round saw categories like “So Sayeth the King James Bible” and “Idiot Idioms.” Will, demonstrating a knack for biblical knowledge, snagged the first Daily Double and built a considerable lead. By the first break, he had amassed $2,600, while Colleen found herself in the red and Kaitlin trailed with $1,200. Will maintained his momentum going into Double Jeopardy with $6,400, followed by Kaitlin with $2,800 and Colleen with $1,800.

Double Jeopardy! brought categories like “That’s Some Opening Act” and “Novel Title Drop a Letter.” Will, continuing his strong performance, found the second Daily Double in “Tributaries” and further extended his lead. The final Daily Double, however, proved to be his downfall. An incorrect response on a literary clue cost him a significant chunk of his earnings, but he still held the top spot going into Final Jeopardy! with $20,000, followed by Kaitlin with $6,800 and Colleen with $4,200.

The Final Jeopardy! category, “Science: The _ of _,” presented a challenging clue about astronomical discoveries. Will played it safe, wagering nothing and securing his win for the day with $20,000. Kaitlin’s wager left her with a single dollar. Colleen, however, was the only one to answer correctly, with “What are the moons of Jupiter?” doubling her score to $8,400.
