Jeopardy! Tuesday January 7, 2025, Recap, “A Costly Sherry”

Jeopardy! Key Art

Government relations professional Josh Heit from Silver Spring, Maryland, returned to Jeopardy! For the Second Chance Tournament. Joining him were therapist Zoe Grobman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and student Enzo Cunanan from Orlando, Florida. From the start, Josh seemed to have the upper hand, amassing a considerable lead in the first round, while Enzo stumbled with an incorrect Daily Double response about Darjeeling, the “place of the thunderbolt.”

Going into Double Jeopardy!, Josh maintained his lead, but the game quickly shifted. Enzo, wagering strategically, capitalized on a Daily Double concerning the setting of Richard Strauss’s opera Der Rosenkavalier (18th-century Vienna during the reign of Maria Theresa), significantly boosting his score. However, the real drama unfolded when Zoe, facing a Daily Double about potent quotables, mispronounced “amontillado,” the pale dry sherry from Edgar Allan Poe’s tale, resulting in a substantial deduction. This misstep proved to be the turning point of the game.

The Final Jeopardy! category, “Facts About Countries,” presented a curious conundrum: a country with 40,000 people but a workforce of 42,000, hinting at a significant commuting population. Both Enzo and Zoe correctly identified Liechtenstein, while Josh’s incorrect response sealed his fate. Although Zoe also answered correctly, her earlier mispronunciation in Double Jeopardy! ultimately cost her the game, allowing Enzo to emerge victorious with $19,400.
