Jeremy Pang’s culinary tour of Hong Kong gets a new travel companion this week, as he’s joined by notoriously sharp food critic Grace Dent. In the fifth episode of the series, airing at 11:40 AM on ITV1, the pair set out to sample the city’s food scene, from the inventive to the deeply traditional, starting with a drink that is certainly a choice: a cocktail infused with beef dripping.

After that memorable start, their food journey takes them to one of Hong Kong’s top-rated restaurants, a clear test for a critic of Dent’s standing. But the episode then pivots from fine dining to something far more rustic. Pang and Dent travel to Kuk Po, one of the region’s last remaining traditional villages, for a meal that gets them closer to the area’s authentic culinary roots.

The contrast between the two settings is the main event here. One minute they are in a high-end establishment pushing the boundaries of modern cuisine, and the next they are eating a village feast rooted in generations of history. This installment of Jeremy Pang’s Hong Kong Kitchen uses its guest well, providing a look at the food of Hong Kong through the eyes of someone whose job it is to have a strong, informed opinion.
