With Joanna Lumley’s soothing narration as our guide, Channel 5’s “Jewels of the Mediterranean” transports us to the amazing island of Cyprus this Friday. From ancient ruins to sun-kissed beaches, Cyprus presents a vibrant tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty.
This episode explores both the traditional and the modern, observing how young Cypriots are adding their own twist to the island’s rich culinary heritage while, elsewhere on the island, women from Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities bond over the age-old art of weaving, a symbol of continuity and shared heritage.
We will journey into rural Cyprus to learn the closely guarded secrets of perfect halloumi production and witness the colorful traditions of a Cypriot village wedding, complete with a dowry dance and blessings bestowed with holy smoke. The program also examines efforts to preserve the picturesque village of Kalopanayiotis and takes a look at Musan, the Mediterranean’s unique underwater sculpture museum.
“Jewels of the Mediterranean: Cyprus” airs Friday, 23 May at 7:00 PM GMT on Channel 5.
