Channel 5’s “Jewels of the Mediterranean” sets sail for Ibiza this Friday, but this is not a visit about nightclubs and DJs. Instead, the program takes a deep dive into the island’s rich culture and traditions. The episode looks beyond the well-known party scene to uncover the true gems of Ibiza, its history, and its people.
Javi and Toni provide insight into the painstaking restoration of a traditional Ibizan fishing boat, known as a llaüt. This fifteen-year, €800,000 conservation project gives viewers a tangible connection to Ibizan maritime heritage. The program will also show viewers the final step of adding the mast, a step that is anything but straightforward.
Keeping Ibizan cultural history alive, dancers Javier and Irene take center stage as they don their traditional garb, complete with ornate gold jewelry, to practice for San Miguel’s Saint Day. The episode presents their commitment to keeping these ancient traditions alive, a celebration that brings the whole community together.
Rounding out the episode is Catalina. She introduces viewers to her family-owned convenience store, a fixture since 1973, sharing her family’s closely guarded secret recipe for flaó, a traditional Ibizan tart.
“Jewels of the Mediterranean” airs Friday, 30 May at 7:00 PM GMT on Channel 5.
