Six part true crime thriller Joan debuts on ITV1 this Sunday, 29 September 2024, at 9:00 pm. Set in Kent in 1985, the series introduces us to Joan O’Connell (played by Sophie Turner), a young mother entangled in a perilous relationship with criminal Gary Darvil (Nick Blood). When Gary’s actions bring danger to their doorstep, Joan takes drastic measures to protect her six-year-old daughter, Kelly (Mia Millichamp-Long).
Fleeing she seeks refuge with her sister and starts working in her salon, determined to rebuild her life. However, Joan’s impulsive nature continues to influence her decisions. She briefly works at a jeweler’s shop, but the manager, Bernard Jones (Alex Blake), displays lecherous behavior, prompting Joan to make a hasty exit. In a spontaneous act, she steals several diamonds before leaving.
Riding the high of her theft, Joan celebrates at a pub, where she encounters Boisie Hannington (Frank Dillane), a consummate gentleman and owner of a nearby antiques shop. Unbeknownst to Joan, Boisie is also a professional thief.
Desperate for money, she finds herself drawn to Boisie’s offer of a potential partnership. As they embark on this path together, questions arise: Will their connection remain purely professional, or could it evolve into something more?
