Comedian Joe Lycett sets off on a transatlantic quest in his new series, “Joe Lycett’s United States of Birmingham.” Appointing himself as his hometown’s ambassador, Lycett aims to forge bonds with the various American and Canadian cities that share Birmingham’s name. It’s a premise ripe with comedic potential, and knowing Lycett, it’s bound to deliver some pointed cultural commentary along the way.
This Tuesday’s premiere kicks off his grand tour, starting with the Birminghams of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Armed with his signature wit and a stack of “Friendship Agreements,” he explores the history and culture of these often-overlooked locales. What do they have in common with his beloved Brum? Probably not much, but that’s where the fun lies.
The series will eventually span eighteen Birminghams across North America, culminating in an “International Day of Birmingham” back in the UK. It’s a celebration of shared names, sure, but also an exploration of the vastly different lives lived within those shared names.
“Joe Lycett’s United States of Birmingham” premieres Tuesday, 22 April at 9:00 PM on Sky Max.
