Johnson & Knopfler’s Music Legends, 25 April 2024, Sky Arts, “Sir Tom Jones”
AC/DC’s Brian Johnson and Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler join forces for the first episode of their new six-part documentary series, Johnson & Knopfler’s Music Legends, welcoming Welsh vocal powerhouse Sir Tom Jones as their first guest.
The series, airing on Sky Arts, sees the rock icons and good friends, Johnson and Knopfler, meet six influential figures from the music industry. Each episode will see the pair embark on a journey through music history, sharing their knowledge and experiences, as well as their own stories and influences.
In the series opener, Johnson and Knopfler sit down with the legendary Sir Tom Jones for a conversation about his illustrious career. Jones reflects on his earliest musical influences, from blues and R&B to rock and roll singers such as Little Richard and Solomon Burke, and his idol, Elvis Presley. Jones will also share stories from his career, including his friendship with Presley, which began in 1965 when they first met at Paramount film studios.
Jones will discuss his rise to fame in the 1960s, with a string of top 10 hits, and his enduring popularity over the decades, including his resurgence in the 2010s as a coach on the talent show The Voice UK. With a voice described as a “full-throated, robust baritone,” Jones has sold over 100 million records, with 36 Top 40 hits in the UK and 19 in the US.
The episode will also feature Johnson and Knopfler joining Jones in song, treating viewers to some of his best-known tracks.
