I’m not sure what’s more disturbing: the fact that children are being asked to bake with bugs, or that I’m actually kind of curious to see how it turns out. This Monday, Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship takes a turn for the creepy-crawly with a terrarium challenge.
Duff Goldman and Kardea Brown, ever the purveyors of culinary chaos, have tasked the remaining five young bakers with creating edible terrariums complete with assigned insects. Yes, you read that right – bugs. Apparently, chocolate-covered crickets and candied ants are on the menu, along with edible dirt and, because bugs love flowers, an edible flower as well.
The challenge seems designed to test both the kids’ creativity and their gag reflexes. While some might excel at crafting realistic landscapes out of cake and frosting, others might struggle to overcome the psychological hurdle of working with ingredients that usually elicit screams rather than smiles. It’s a high-stakes episode, as one young baker will be sent home, dreams of cake-based glory dashed against the hard exoskeleton of reality. I just hope no one develops a lifelong aversion to gummy worms.
Will this be a culinary triumph or a televised entomological disaster? Tune in to Food Network this Monday at 8:00 PM ET/PT to find out.
