Killer Cases: Murder in the Family – Ilene Gowan (A&E, May 22, 2024)

Killer Cases

A brand new episode of Killer Cases, titled “Murder in the Family,” is set to air on A&E on Wednesday May 22. The episode explores a tragic case where the victim and perpetrator are revealed to be family.

In this episode we head to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where an investigation unfolds following the death of Ilene Gowan, a well-liked waitress in the community.

Ilene Gowan, a 60-year-old resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was reported missing on February 15, 2023, by her daughter after she hadn’t been seen or heard from for two days. Gowan was last seen leaving her work on February 13, 2023, and was known to have an on-again, off-again relationship with Ivan “Sam” Brammer, 61, which was described as “volatile.”

On February 26, 2023, Gowan’s body was discovered in a ditch near 152nd Street and Old Mormon Bridge Road, outside the city limits of Council Bluffs. Her body was still frozen to the ground, and authorities believe she had been there since her disappearance. An initial autopsy was unable to determine a cause of death, but a second opinion from renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden concluded that Gowan died from asphyxiation, specifically strangulation.

Brammer was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse and second-degree theft in relation to Gowan’s disappearance. He was later charged with second-degree murder after Gowan’s family sought a second opinion on the autopsy. Brammer’s truck was seen on video footage with Gowan appearing unconscious in the passenger seat. Brammer sold the truck to a scrapyard the day before Gowan’s body was found, and it was subsequently crushed and shredded.
