The first episode of Killer Lies: Chasing A True Crime Con Man, titled “Murder He Wrote,” airs on National Geographic on Wednesday, 28 August 2024, at 8:00 p.m. The episode explores the rise and fall of Stéphane Bourgoin, a world-renowned serial killer expert whose success coincided with the explosive growth of the lucrative true-crime industry.
Stéphane Bourgoin’s infamy is scrutinized in this episode, which is based on Lauren Collins’s 2022 New Yorker exposé of the same name. Bourgoin’s extraordinary résumé, including his jailhouse interviews with serial killers and his morbid encounters, propelled him to fame. However, his career was built on a foundation of dark lies, which are exposed by a group of vigilante online sleuths known as the 4th Eye.
The episode examines Bourgoin’s motivation for his obsession with the minds of murderers, citing the violent and horrifying murder of his wife by a serial killer in 1976. Despite his 40-year career and 40 books on the subject, Bourgoin becomes the target of the 4th Eye, who uncover the shocking extent of his deception.
Exclusive interviews with 4th Eye members, as well as material from Bourgoin’s own films and past television appearances, are included in the episode. It also features forensically re-examined archival footage.
