Ladies in Black ABC Australia

The highly anticipated first episode of “Ladies in Black” is set to air on ABC Australia on Sunday, June 16, at 8:30 p.m., with all episodes available for streaming on ABC iview. The series, set in Sydney in the turbulent year of 1961, explores the lives of women working in Goodes ladieswear, as they navigate societal shifts and personal challenges during the fashion transformation of the sixties.

In the first episode, we meet Magda (Debi Mazar), a woman with a vision to revolutionize Australian women’s fashion. However, her dreams are threatened by her husband Stefan’s (Russell Dykstra) ill-fated financial decision to lend money to their friend Rudi (Thom Green). Magda finds herself trapped at Goodes, forced to climb her way back up amid conservative and snobbish opposition.

Meanwhile, newlywed Fay (Jessica De Gouw) struggles with her husband Rudi’s financial risk-taking, which postpones their plans for starting a family. The situation creates a rift between Fay and Magda, who are in dire need of mutual support.

Lisa (Clare Hughes), who returns to Sydney due to a family tragedy, finds herself caught in the turmoil at Goodes ladieswear. Her aspirations of academic success at university are jeopardized by financial constraints, leaving her torn between her ambitions and the necessity to provide for herself.

Lisa’s determination to make an impact on the world is further challenged by the indifference of Richard (Tom Wilson), a charismatic and influential figure in the university community.

The staff at Goodes ladieswear navigate a range of challenges, including competition, demanding customers, unruly staff, shoplifters, and internal rivalries. Tensions rise between Magda and the newly arrived Mrs. Ambrose (Miranda Otto), who brings with her a more conservative approach to fashion, having previously worked at Harrods. The conflict between Elias (Julian Maroun), Head of Visual Merchandising, and Mackenzie (Todd McKenney), the chief buyer, also intensifies, with a dark underlying cause.
