Law & Order: “The Hardest Thing” (NBC, Thursday, January 30, 2025)

“Law & Order” is back with a new case that seems ripped from the headlines, or at least the kind of headlines that dominate the financial pages. Detectives Shaw and Riley are investigating the murder of a wealthy man found dead in his own home. The list of suspects is presumably long and filled with people who might have had a financial motive. Because when it comes to murder mysteries involving the rich, greed is always a good place to start.

But the investigation isn’t the only focus. ADA Price is grappling with a particularly tough trial. The details are yet to be revealed, but it’s enough to put his reputation on the line. As if professional pressure weren’t enough, Price is also dealing with a personal crisis: his father’s declining health. It’s a familiar trope, the high-powered lawyer juggling work and family drama, but “Law & Order” rarely misses a chance to remind us that even the most hardened legal eagles have a soft spot.

This episode aims to strike a balance between the procedural aspects of the murder investigation and the personal struggles of Price. Will he be able to maintain his composure in court while dealing with the emotional weight of his father’s illness? And will Shaw and Riley uncover the truth behind the wealthy man’s demise? “Law & Order” viewers know that justice, however delayed or complicated, usually prevails.
