Journalist Liz Hayes has concluded her impressive 44-year career with the Nine Network. The network stated that Hayes is exploring fresh ventures outside of Nine in 2025.
Rumours of her exit had circulated, with recent reports suggesting uncertainty even among 60 Minutes staff about her future. It’s understood Hayes wasn’t keen on continuing with 60 Minutes in its present format. Nine says she’ll still appear for particular events.
Hayes began at 9News in 1981 as a reporter, later presenting the morning news. In 1986, she co-hosted Today with Steve Liebmann for a decade. She moved to 60 Minutes in 1996, reporting on a wide scope of stories, from U.S. presidential elections to the Syrian refugee crisis. Known for her insightful interviews, she has spoken with prominent figures, including Prime Ministers, business leaders, and celebrities, while also focusing on the experiences of ordinary individuals in remarkable circumstances.
Her work has been acknowledged with awards, including a Logie for The Greatest Gift and the 2024 Media Diversity Australia Award for Under Investigation with Liz Hayes.
Hayes expressed gratitude for her time at Nine, acknowledging the “decades of experience” and “wonderful friendships.” Nine’s Director of Television, Michael Healy, called Hayes a “television legend” and thanked her for her contributions.
