Chief Inspector Maigret is pulled into a case that begins with an act of stark and seemingly random violence. When a student is brutally stabbed to death on a public street, the investigation appears straightforward at first. The crime, however, lacks an obvious motive, forcing the detective to look beyond simple clues and evidence. His focus shifts to the psychology of the killer, as he attempts to build a profile of a person capable of such a cold-blooded attack in plain sight.
The investigation into the student’s murder is the kind of puzzle Maigret excels at solving; it requires intuition and a deep understanding of human nature. He must piece together the victim’s life to find a reason for his violent end. The detective’s methods put him in his element, patiently turning over details and observing the people connected to the case until the truth begins to surface from the shadows.
Just as he begins to make progress, the case is complicated by a desperate plea from an entirely different quarter. Countess Sophie makes a frantic call, convinced that her life is in immediate danger.
