The Man Who Murdered His Family: Chris Watts (Channel 5, Wednesday, 2 October 2024)

Police True Crime

The Man Who Murdered His Family tells the disturbing story of Christopher Watts, a Colorado man with a dark secret. In the quiet suburbs, Watts lived what appeared to be a perfect life. However, in the early hours of August 13, 2018, his true nature was revealed.

That fateful day, Watts murdered his pregnant wife, Shanann, by strangulation, and their two children, Bella and Celeste, by suffocation. He buried Shanann in a shallow grave and disposed of his children’s bodies in crude oil tanks at his workplace. The motive behind these horrific acts? A desire to start anew with his girlfriend, Nichol Kessinger.

As the investigation unfolded, Watts initially denied any involvement in his family’s disappearance. However, he was arrested on August 15 after confessing to Shanann’s murder and later admitted to taking the lives of his children.

On November 6, 2018, Watts pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree murder as part of a plea deal. With the death penalty removed from sentencing, he was sentenced to life in prison.

The case files paint a chilling picture, revealing that Watts was engaged in a secret romance with his coworker, Nichol Kessinger, who ultimately reported their affair to the police. Kessinger’s belief was that financial issues played a significant role in driving Watts to commit these heinous crimes.
