The Mission is a new documentary series on SBS that follows journalist Marc Fennell as he investigates one of Australia’s largest art heists. Premiering on Tuesday, October 24 at 8:30pm, the three-part series explores the mysterious heist that occurred in the mid-1980s at the art gallery of the New Norcia Monastery in Western Australia.

During the heist, 26 European masterpieces worth millions of dollars were slashed out of their frames, leaving investigators puzzled. The Mission aims to unravel the complexities of this crime and uncover the identities behind it. Fennell begins his investigation at the scene of the crime, the New Norcia Monastery, and follows leads to various locations around the world, including New York City, London, and Manila.

Throughout his journey, Fennell uncovers new evidence and court documents, meeting key individuals involved in the heist. The series not only delves into the art theft but also explores hidden histories and crimes that extend beyond the robbery itself. From political scandals to the dark legacy haunting New Norcia and Australia, The Mission sheds light on stolen futures and lives.

Fennell said of the series “The moment you step foot on the grounds of New Norcia you sense – almost immediately – that you are stepping into history. The Mission is the epicentre of multiple crimes committed over generations that range from the farcical to the downright evil. Director Corrin Grant and I first started talking about this story when we were finishing up Framed and I don’t think either of us realised that it would take us all the way to the chaotic streets of Manila or right to the front door of the Trump building in New York. The tendrils of this story reach all around the globe. But their roots lie in some of the darkest chapters of our own nation.”

Combining archival footage with dramatized recreations, The Mission is a must-watch for true crime enthusiasts, history buffs, and documentary lovers. The series is produced by Marc Fennell and Corrin Grant.
