In the second episode of The Marlow Murder Club, Judith (Samantha Bond), Becks (Cara Horgan), and Suzie (Jo Martin) apparently decided that ignoring police warnings is a perfectly reasonable hobby for retirees with a penchant for true crime podcasts. Despite Detective Inspector Tanika Malik (Natalie Dew) pointedly suggesting they stick to knitting or competitive bingo, the intrepid trio continues to poke their noses into a murder investigation.
This time, their amateur sleuthing revolves around the murder weapon, which conveniently leaves a trail of breadcrumbs leading to a local weapons collector. One imagines this collector isn’t thrilled about having a gaggle of middle aged ladies snooping around his collection of antique swords, rusty muskets, and possibly a candlestick that doubles as a blunt instrument.
Their questioning apparently proves less than fruitful, but Judith, bless her soul, decides to take matters into her own hands, which inevitably lands her in a spot of trouble during a break-in. Because nothing says “amateur detective” like unauthorized entry into a potential crime scene. Fortunately, she survives to spot a crucial pattern in the evidence.
With the help of some local magnet fishers, the ladies dredge up even more clues, leading to the chilling realization that Marlow has a serial killer on the loose. One wonders if D.I. Malik will finally appreciate their assistance, or if she’ll just add “obstructing justice” to their growing list of extracurricular activities.
The Marlow Murder Club (Season 1, Episode 2) airs Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 9:00 pm on PBS.
