Martin Clunes returns to ITV1 this Friday with another dose of island escapism in “Martin Clunes’ Islands of the Atlantic.” This week, he’s trading the windswept landscapes of the Outer Hebrides (featured in the first episode) for the sun-kissed shores of Madeira and the volcanic wonders of the Azores.
In Madeira, Clunes takes on the island’s notoriously steep mountain roads in a rally driving lesson. He tackles hairpin turns and steep inclines. Later, exploring a historic sea fort, once a tiny island within Funchal harbor, Clunes uncovers the story of Prince Renato II, adding a dash of royal intrigue to his Madeiran adventure.
From the relative calm of Madeira, Clunes hops over to the Azores, landing on São Miguel. Here, he gets a taste of local cuisine, sampling the traditional “cozido das furnas,” a dish cooked underground using volcanic heat. The episode continues with a look at the Azores’ whaling history on Faial Island, where Clunes joins a seasoned skipper in search of sperm whales.
“Martin Clunes’ Islands of the Atlantic” airs Friday, 9 May at 9:00 PM on ITV1.
