Matt Baker and his parents, Janice and Mike, return for another excursion, this time with a new furry companion, Archie the puppy. In this episode, the trio explores Cragside House and Gardens in Northumberland, an extraordinary 19th-century estate built by Lord William Armstrong, known as the ‘Magician of the North.’
Cragside, Britain’s original smart home, features Lord Armstrong’s innovative hydro-electric inventions, which powered the house and impressed royalty worldwide. Janice looks into Lady Margaret Armstrong’s contributions, highlighting her passion for botany, which led to the creation of one of the country’s largest alpine rock gardens.
The Bakers also visit Cragend Farm, where they discover how Lord Armstrong’s influence extended to agricultural machinery, and even inspired the design of an iconic London landmark—Tower Bridge. Back in the kitchen, Matt and Janice try their hand at making ‘singing hinnies’, a local delicacy, and explore the Victorian-era dishwasher.
