Mean Girl Murders, April 8, 2024, ID, “Girls in the Hoods”
In this episode of Mean Girl Murders, airing on ID on Monday April 8, viewers are transported to the treacherous world of junior high social dynamics, where popularity and clique allegiance can have deadly consequences. The episode centers around the tragic story of Shanda Sharer, a 12-year-old girl who becomes entangled in a complex web of teenage romance and jealousy.
Shanda, a well-adjusted and cheerful middle school student, recently moved to New Albany, Indiana, with her recently divorced mother. She quickly adapts to her new surroundings, making friends and excelling in cheerleading, volleyball, and softball. However, her life takes a dark turn when she crosses paths with a popular jock and the leader of a clique known as “the Hoods.”
Shanda’s journey begins when she meets classmate Amanda Heavrin at Hazelwood Middle School. The two girls initially get into a fight, but their rivalry soon turns into an unexpected friendship and romantic relationship. Their bond is met with hesitation from Shanda’s mother, who is concerned about the age difference and Amanda’s previous aggression towards her daughter.
Enter Melinda Loveless, a 16-year-old with a turbulent family background. Melinda had been dating Amanda and becomes enraged by her relationship with Shanda. Melinda’s jealousy fuels her anger, and she begins to threaten both Shanda and Amanda, even expressing a desire to kill the young Shanda. The situation escalates to the point where Shanda’s mother transfers her to a private Catholic school to protect her.
On the night of January 10, 1992, Melinda enlists the help of three friends: Laurie Tackett (17), Hope Rippey (15), and Toni Lawrence (15). Together, they devise a plan to exact revenge on Shanda. They lure her out of her father’s house under the pretense of meeting Amanda and take her to an isolated location known as “The Witch’s Castle.”
What follows is a gruesome series of events. Melinda, fueled by jealousy and rage, leaps from the backseat, knife in hand, and threatens Shanda. The girls beat and torture Shanda, attempting to slit her throat and stab her. Believing her to be dead, they throw her in the trunk of their car. However, when they realize she is still alive, they continue their brutal assault, ultimately burning her alive.
As the girls indulge in a McDonald’s breakfast, two hunters discover Shanda’s charred remains, setting off a chain of events that leads to their arrest. The episode delves into the motivations of the girls, exploring their abusive histories and dysfunctional family environments.
