In the second installment of Michael Palin in Nigeria, the legendary traveler embarks on a journey through Northern Nigeria, exploring diverse cultural facets and connecting with locals who share their stories of resilience and courage. This episode offers a nuanced perspective on a country with a rich history and a complex present.

The episode, airing on Channel 5 on Tuesday 23 April begins with Michael scaling Dala Hill in the ancient city of Kano, where he is joined by local resident Mohammad Adamu. Together, they take in the spellbinding view that serves as the starting point for an 800-mile road trip across the country. Along the way, Michael witnesses the ancient Hausa sport of Dambe Boxing, a brutal yet elegant form of hand-to-hand combat that serves as a rite of passage for young men from impoverished areas.

Michael then meets Amina Ali Nkeki, one of the 276 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014. In an extraordinarily emotional interview, Amina shares her harrowing experience of being forced to marry one of her captors and having a daughter during her captivity. Her story takes a turn toward hope as she recounts her traumatic escape and eventual reunion with her mother.

The journey continues with a visit to a luxury hotel and polo club, where Michael meets polo player Folarin Kuku and learns about the sport’s unexpected popularity in Nigeria. Michael then travels to the modern capital of Abuja, exploring the wide avenues and glass offices that give the city a unique character. He also visits the iconic Zuma Rock, a 300-meter-high geological wonder.

As Michael navigates the potholed roads, he arrives in Lokoja, the former center of British colonial rule in Nigeria. Here, he meets with Chris Nwobu to discuss the lasting impact of colonialism and the complex relationship between Nigeria and the UK.
