Michael Palin in Nigeria Series Premiere, 16 April 2024, Channel 5
In this series premiere, Michael Palin embarks on a journey to Nigeria, exploring the country’s complexities and its impact on his life. Known as “The Giant of Africa,” Nigeria presents a unique blend of stunning landscapes, diverse cultures, and a rapidly growing population.
The episode, airing on Channel 5 on Tuesday 16 April, begins with Palin’s arrival in Lagos, where he experiences the city’s stark contrasts, from heart-wrenching poverty to extravagant wealth. He meets individuals from all walks of life, including a young woman rebuilding her life after being kidnapped by Boko Haram and an environmentalist fighting government corruption.
As he navigates the country, Palin uncovers a place where optimism thrives despite adversity. He visits Makoko, often characterised as the biggest slum in Africa, and the coastal town of Badagry, a former slave port. Palin also immerses himself in Lagos’ bustling nightlife and meets Yeni Kuti, the daughter of the late musician Fela Kuti, regarded as the father of Afrobeat.
The journey is not without its challenges. Palin encounters roadside attacks and the constant threat of kidnapping, requiring him to travel with armed guards. He also loses one of his vans due to the country’s poor infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, Palin discovers a Nigeria of stunning nature, strong cultures, and welcoming people.
At 80 years old, Palin reflects on the profound impact of this trip, calling it one of the most prophetic journeys of his life. He explores how Nigeria’s past, present, and future are interconnected, with the country set to become a major player on the world stage.
Michael Palin in Nigeria Premieres on Channel 5 at 9:00 PM on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.
