Michael Portillo heads to Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant and colourful capital, in the second episode of Michael Portillo’s Long Weekends.
In this episode, Michael embraces the sea-faring spirit of the great navigators, savours quirky and fiery Portuguese cuisine, and uncovers the origins of James Bond. He also explores the city’s narrow medieval streets, visits a unique ceramic factory, and takes a sailing trip down the Portuguese Riviera.
Michael begins his weekend by jumping aboard the iconic No. 28 vintage tram, which takes him through Lisbon’s medieval streets to the historic district of Alfama. Here, he discovers the devastating impact of the 1755 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. He also squeezes into one of the city’s tiniest shops, which specialises in just one fashion accessory: gloves.
At the lively Campo de Ourique food market, Michael samples unusual delicacies like goosefoot barnacles and tinned fish tapas, as well as enjoying a traditional salted cod feast at a street kiosk. He then tries his hand at designing his own tile at a 280-year-old decorative ceramic factory, creating a unique souvenir in his own distinctive style.
As evening falls, Michael is transfixed by the sounds of Fado, the wistful folk music that often fills the air in Lisbon. The following day, he takes to the sea, sailing to the elite resort of Cascais on the Portuguese Riviera. Here, he visits the hotel where ‘James Bond’ author Ian Fleming met the real-life secret agent who inspired his famous character.
Michael also indulges in some of Portugal’s famous pastries, including the president’s favourite treats at a bakery in Cascais. He seeks out a restaurant known for its Piri Piri chicken, a spicy dish that has become an internet sensation.
The journey also includes a visit to the Jerónimos Monastery, where he witnesses a unique illumination of the statue of Christ during the spring equinox. Michael concludes his weekend with a sweet treat at a bakery that claims to make the best chocolate cake in the world—a claim he finds hard to dispute.
