On Tuesday night the documentary series Missing, Presumed Dead examines the disappearance and eventual rediscovery of Michael Scott Moore, an American journalist, and novelist.
Moore’s story began in January 2012 when he was abducted in Somalia while researching a book about piracy. He found himself held captive by a local gang of pirates in the town of Galkayo, who demanded a staggering $20 million for his release. What followed was a lengthy and complex negotiation process involving American officials and the German Foreign Ministry.
The episode details the behind-the-scenes efforts and challenges faced during these negotiations, which ultimately led to Moore’s freedom. On September 22, 2014, after more than two and a half years in captivity, he was released upon payment of $1.6 million.
During his captivity, Moore found solace in writing, composing a memoir titled The Desert and the Sea. In his book, he provides a firsthand account of his experiences, especially the political and historical forces that shaped his ordeal. Now a member of the Board of Directors of Hostage US, a non-profit organization, Moore uses his experience to support other American hostages and their families.
Missing, Presumed Dead: Michael Scott Moore: The Negotiator airs on Crime & Investigation on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, at 9:00 pm.
