“Moonshiners” is less about the actual distilling of illicit liquor and more about the colorful characters who populate the Appalachian backwoods. And nobody is more colorful than Tickle. This week, Tickle finds himself in a predicament familiar to many a moonshiner: a batch of sorghum seed liquor gone wrong. His solution? Poaching pumpkins from his wife’s garden.
Yes, you read that right. Apparently, pumpkins are the secret ingredient to salvaging a botched batch of moonshine (who knew?). Of course, this being Tickle, I’m sure his “acquisition” of the pumpkins will be anything but discreet. Will he sneak in under cover of darkness? Or will he just brazenly march into the garden, pumpkin pilfering in broad daylight? I’m picturing a Benny Hill-esque chase scene, with Tickle’s wife in hot pursuit, brandishing a rolling pin.
Meanwhile, Mike and Jerry are tackling a different kind of fermentation project: hard kombucha. A hippie commune has placed an order for a large batch, and our intrepid shiners are about to discover that kombucha brewing is a bit more complicated than just adding sugar to tea and letting it sit. Will their experiment result in a refreshing beverage or a biohazard? Tuesday night will tell.
