Beverley Gail Allitt, born in 1968, was a State Enrolled Nurse at the Grantham and Kesteven Hospital in Lincolnshire. Between February and April 1991, she carried out a spate of attacks on children in her care, using her medical knowledge to cause harm. Allitt administered large doses of insulin to her victims and was found to have injected a large air bubble into the body of one child. The methods she employed were initially unclear to investigators, adding to the complexity of the case.
Allitt’s crimes resulted in her receiving thirteen life sentences at Nottingham Crown Court in 1993. Due to the severity of her offences, she was committed to Rampton Secure Hospital, a high-security facility for individuals detained under the Mental Health Act. Allitt has since admitted to three of the murders and six of the assaults, ensuring she will remain on the Home Office list of criminals never to be released.
