The Robert Neulander case is the focus of an upcoming episode of Murder By Medic. The former doctor was convicted of killing his wife, Leslie Neulander, in two separate trials, with the first trial in 2015 resulting in a first-degree murder conviction and the second in 2022 leading to a second-degree murder conviction.
Judge Thomas Miller, who presided over the initial trial, asserted that Neulander intentionally murdered his wife and attempted to involve their daughter in concealing the crime. While prosecutors argued that rage was a factor, a clear motive was not established. Suggested motives included marital issues and financial considerations, such as life insurance and the couple’s assets, but these were not proven during the trial.
Neulander’s defence team has sought to appeal the second conviction, requesting a new trial or a reduced sentence. Their appeal centres on a rare legal instruction from Judge Miller regarding a “missing witness,” as Neulander’s daughter was not called to testify by the defence in the second trial.
