Most of us watch nature documentaries for one reason: to see cool animals doing cool animal things. And this week’s Nature on PBS delivers just that. Premiering Wednesday, February 12th at 8:00 PM, “Expedition Killer Whale” takes us to the icy wilds of Antarctica to witness one of the ocean’s most formidable predators in action.
Forget the warm beaches and playful dolphins of other nature shows. This one’s all about the hunt. Scientists and filmmakers brave freezing waters to observe killer whales – Orcas, if you prefer – employing sophisticated strategies to take down prey in one of the most challenging environments on Earth.
While most of us are huddled indoors battling winter chills, these folks are out there documenting some seriously impressive cetacean teamwork. I’m not going to pretend to know the nuances of killer whale hunting techniques, but I’m pretty sure it involves more than just bumping into seals and hoping for the best.
Expect stunning visuals of the Antarctic landscape and marine life, as well as insights into the unique adaptations that allow these apex predators to thrive in subzero temperatures. If you’re looking for an antidote to the usual barrage of reality TV and sitcoms, this episode of Nature provides a welcome dose of the wild.
Nature airs Wednesdays at 8:00 PM on PBS.
