CBS is gambling that lightning can strike twice, maybe even thrice, with another spinoff of its aging sitcom, The Neighborhood. This time, the focus shifts to Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty (Sheaun McKinney), the somewhat less irritating Butler siblings, as they flee the confines of their parents’ home for the sun-soaked, vaguely seedy shores of Venice Beach.
The as-yet-untitled spinoff will use the Season 7 finale of The Neighborhood as a backdoor pilot, conveniently introducing three new characters set to join Malcolm and Marty in their beachfront misadventures. Prepare to meet a tech millionaire with the social graces of a seagull, a wannabe influencer whose follower count remains stubbornly in the double digits, and a cannabis shop content creator desperately trying to convince their Midwestern parents that this counts as a “real job.”
While it’s tough to say whether this premise can sustain a series, let alone match the success of its parent show, CBS seems eager to milk every last drop out of this particular cash cow. This marks the second Neighborhood spinoff in development. The first, Crutch, starring Tracy Morgan, will land on Paramount+, which feels slightly more fitting than another network sitcom.
The Neighborhood returns with new episodes Monday, January 27, 2025, at 8/7c on CBS.
