Netflix has officially started production on the second season of its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with the announcement that Miya Cech will join the cast as Toph, a fan-favorite character from the original animated series. The news was shared during the Geeked Week Live event in Atlanta.
Miya Cech, known for her roles in Rim of the World and The Astronauts, will portray Toph Beifong, a highly skilled earthbender who was born blind and trained to sense her surroundings through vibrations in the ground. Speaking about her preparation for the role, Cech revealed that she has already begun a rigorous training regimen. “I’ve been in boot camp for about a week and a half now and still have a lot of work to do, but it’s super fun,” she said, adding that her prior experience in martial arts and dance has been helpful in developing Toph’s unique movements.
To ensure accurate representation, Cech is working closely with a consultant from the blindness community. This collaboration aims to portray Toph’s blindness respectfully while highlighting her strengths as one of the most powerful characters in the series.
Season 2 will once again follow Aang, played by Gordon Cormier, and his companions Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) as they navigate their quest to restore balance to the world. Along the way, they must confront Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim), while gathering allies to help in their mission.
The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is based on the original animated show created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The story is set in a world where four nations – Water, Earth, Fire, and Air – coexist, with the Avatar serving as the master of all four elements.
