Dark Clouds Gather Over Tasmania in Netflix’s “The Survivors”

The Survivors Netflix Key Art

Sometimes returning home stirs up more than just old memories. That seems to be the case in Netflix’s new murder mystery, “The Survivors,” a six-part limited series coming Thursday, June 6. Based on Jane Harper’s novel, the show uses the stunning, wild landscapes of Tasmania as the setting for a story steeped in guilt and long-held secrets.

The story starts with Kieran Elliott, played by Charlie Vickers, known for “The Rings of Power.” Kieran comes back to his small coastal hometown fifteen years after a terrible event changed everything. Just as it seems like life might move forward, a new murder pulls him right back into the town’s hidden past. It seems the echoes of that earlier tragedy are still very much alive, threatening to break apart everything Kieran thought he knew.

Alongside Vickers, the cast includes Yerin Ha from “Halo” and a strong group of familiar faces from Australian and New Zealand screens, including Robyn Malcolm, Damien Garvey, Thom Green, George Mason, Shannon Berry, Jessica De Gouw, Miriama Smith, and Catherine McClements. With two different directors, Cherie Nowlan and Ben C Lucas, handling episodes, the series aims for a visually striking look that matches the drama of its plot.

“The Survivors” comes from Tony Ayres Productions, the team behind series like “Clickbait” and “Stateless,” so there’s a good track record here for tight, suspenseful storytelling.
