On Thursday 21 March 2024 at 8.30pm, ABC TV will air the fourth episode of Series 8 of “Grand Designs New Zealand.” In this latest installment, viewers will follow the journey of Josh and Esther Perriam as they embark on the construction of their long-awaited family home in New Brighton.
Esther, a true-blue local hailing from the Christchurch seaside suburb, has always envisioned building her dream home on the beachfront. After purchasing a section across from the beach a few years ago, she and her husband Josh have been patiently waiting for the opportune moment to bring their vision to life.
However, building on such limited land space poses its own set of challenges. With a narrow lot measuring just under nine meters wide, smart architecture is crucial to maximise every square meter available. Fortunately, their chosen architect has devised a design that utilises tilt slab construction, ensuring efficient use of their elongated site.
The planned layout includes a spacious living area at the front of the house, with private bedrooms situated towards the rear. These spaces will be connected by an expansive glass corridor and complemented by a sizeable outdoor area nestled between them.
Once construction commences, Esther’s father will take charge as the lead builder while Josh takes leave from his job in freight logistics to assist as second-in-command. However, there’s one small obstacle: Josh readily admits he has limited experience with tools and lacks familiarity with construction terminology like flashings and floor plans.
As this ambitious project unfolds against tight budget constraints, one question looms: Will Josh’s self-professed novice status hinder or help his father-in-law? And more importantly, will it affect their overall budget?
