A new original drama from the BBC, penned by the multi-award-winning screenwriter Jimmy McGovern, is set to explore the profound impact of grooming and sexual abuse on a family. Directed by Julia Ford, the untitled single drama will be produced by LA Productions for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
Set and filmed in Liverpool, the fictional drama centres around the Mitchell family as they deal with the devastating aftermath of an act of abuse committed by a family member. The family grapples with the consequences of this betrayal, particularly after the perpetrator is released from prison following the completion of his sentence.
The cast is led by Emmy-winner Anna Friel, who was also BAFTA-nominated for her role in McGovern’s “Broken.” Joining her are Bobby Schofield, BAFTA-winner Anna Maxwell Martin, BAFTA-winner David Threlfall, and Mark Womack.
Additional casting announcements are forthcoming.
The 90-minute drama is written by Jimmy McGovern, directed by Julia Ford, and produced by Donna Molloy. Executive producers include Jimmy McGovern, Colin McKeown for LA Productions, and Nawfal Faizullah and Katherine Bond for the BBC.
