New ‘Maigret’ Adaptation Heading to MASTERPIECE Mystery

A new adaptation of Georges Simenon’s novels, “Maigret”, is heading to MASTERPIECE Mystery on PBS, with production underway in Budapest. The series will feature a contemporary take on the iconic Parisian Chief Inspector Jules Maigret, played by Benjamin Wainwright.

The show is produced by Playground, with Colin Callender and David Stern serving as executive producers. Patrick Harbinson, known for his work on “Homeland” and “24”, will serve as lead writer and executive producer, directing the first two episodes. Faye Gilbert and David Evans will direct the subsequent episodes.

The series will also star Stefanie Martini as Madame Louise Maigret, with Blake Harrison, Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok, and Rob Kazinsky as Maigret’s loyal team of detectives. Nathalie Armin will play Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel.

“Maigret” will bring Simenon’s vivid portrayal of Paris to life, especially the city’s diverse social strata, from the upper-class world of luxury to the underground haunts of criminals. The adaptation aims to capture Maigret’s unique approach to crime-solving, emphasising his relentless pursuit of justice and deep understanding of human nature.

The series is based on the second best-selling detective series of all time, with over 800 million copies of Simenon’s books sold in more than 50 languages. Playground has licensed the English-speaking rights to the entire series, consisting of 75 novels and 28 short stories.
