Next at the Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center and PBS join forces to present “Joshua Redman, where are we,” as part of their NEXT at the Kennedy Center series. The episode shines a spotlight on renowned jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman and his collaborative project with soulful vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.

In this installment, airing on Friday April 19, Redman performs songs from his critically acclaimed album, “where are we,” which explores the myths and realities of life in America. The album, created during the pandemic, offers a unique perspective on the country, blending contrasting mashups from different genres and eras. From Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” to his renditions of “Stars Fell on Alabama” and John Coltrane’s “Alabama,” Redman’s music serves as a tribute to the power of place.

Redman is joined by an all-star ensemble, including pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Brian Blade. Together, they navigate the duality of differing jazz standards, infusing them with Redman’s improvisational brilliance and melodic invention that defines his artistry. This marks Redman’s first collaboration with a vocalist on one of his own projects, featuring the song “After Minneapolis (Face Toward Mo [u]rning),” dedicated to the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. Cavassa’s distinctive voice and lyricism add a personal and intimate touch to this powerful piece.
