On July 9, 2002, Shand was found brutally murdered inside her new home in Ranchos de Taos, a small community near Taos.
The discovery of Shand’s body, lying in a pool of her own blood, sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community. Authorities determined that she had been stabbed multiple times, with 14 stab wounds, and her throat had been slashed twice. The autopsy also revealed that Shand had been raped before her death.
