On Wednesday, PBS’s long-running documentary series NOVA is looking at the volcanic activity in our solar system and its impact on different worlds. From Mars’ towering Olympus Mons to the toxic atmosphere of Venus, the episode reveals the explosive forces that shape these planets and moons.
The episode, titled “Solar System: Volcano Worlds,” investigates the giant volcanic mountain, Olympus Mons, which stands proudly on Mars, reaching heights more than double that of Mount Everest. Moving closer to the Sun, the narrative turns to Venus, where thousands of volcanoes contribute to its boiling temperatures by producing a toxic atmosphere.
Jupiter’s moon, Io, takes center stage as the most volcanically active world in our solar system. Meanwhile, on Saturn’s moon Enceladus, watery eruptions provide intriguing hints about the potential existence of life.
NOVA: Solar System: Volcano Worlds airs Wednesday, 16 October 2024, at 9:00 p.m. on PBS.
