National Geographic premieres its new three part documentary series “Oklahoma City Bombing: One Day in America” this Wednesday, revisiting a tragedy that shook the nation. The first episode, “Explosion,” takes us back to April 19, 1995, recounting the events of that horrific day when a bomb detonated outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, claiming 168 lives and injuring hundreds more.
Using rare archival footage and first-hand accounts from survivors, first responders, and investigators, “Explosion” doesn’t just rehash the facts. It offers a visceral, moment-by-moment account of the immediate chaos, the desperate rescue efforts, the relentless media coverage, and the beginning of the FBI’s investigation.
We hear from former President Bill Clinton and former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating, reflecting on their leadership during this national crisis. Survivor Amy Downs shares her harrowing experience of being trapped in the rubble, while Edye Raines describes the agonizing search for her two missing children. FBI Special Agent Bob Ricks offers insight into the pressure-cooker environment of the early investigation.
“Oklahoma City Bombing: One Day in America” is more than just a historical account. It’s a story of survival, resilience, and the pursuit of justice in the face of unimaginable loss. Tune in to National Geographic this Wednesday, April 2nd at 8:00 PM. Episodes 2 and 3 follow on directly after this episode.
